At a UN-sponsored conference in Stockholm, aimed at charting a course for the reconstruction of Iraq, Prime Minister Nuri Al-Maliki called Thursday for further relief from his country's foreign debt burden. The Stockholm conference brought together representatives of nearly 100 nations in the first annual review of the International Compact with Iraq,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which began last year in the Egyptian resort of Sharm el-Sheikh. The process aims to generate increased international support for Iraq in return for political and economic reforms. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon opened the meeting on an optimistic note.

The life of a civic group depends on how well it distances itself from those in power.
